<Computex 2009: Some News about Ubuntu>
On the 4th of June, Canonical invited more than a dozen of press media for something about Ubuntu. Quite frankly, it's the kind of occasion that we would be eager to attend. For starter, we pretty much knew what will be said, since we care about Ubuntu and constantly monitor for its latest development. On top of that, we knew that in most cases, what will be said usually set from global or Asia perspectives; rarely will there be anything Taiwan specific content that might interest us.
In short, nothing other than expressing the determination of trying to run and manage, which is good. However, if someone can tell us something about any tangible plans about dealing with ARM, who might be the future business partners and etc., then we will feel grateful to the helpful staffs at Canonical. However, in the end, still nothing.
Quite frankly we would rather hope for the chance to invite the technical staffs to our HQ to talk about their stories at work, or someone from the vendor to talk about the issues with promoting Ubuntu in Taiwan, something they wouldn't be talking about in the press conference.
Ubuntu
Anyway, for your reference, here is a summary of what was in this press conference:
* Countless netbook with Ubuntu installed on display.
* ODM products from Pegatron, Wistron and Wistron
* The Classmate notebook
* With Dell being the most supportive, four on display
* ARM based too. For more detail, check out this article (note: in traditional Chinese text).
* A nettop from Brazilian manufacturer
* One of the notebook have Android ported to it.
* A sub-note with Moblin V2 integrated to it.
* A plan to expand the organization in Taiwan with more staffs.
* Mentioned for fact that Windows 7 is a nice operating system, and competitive-cooperation with other Linux camps.
Towards the end of the session, we did ask a not so appropriate question. The question we raise is related to the sales in Taiwan. Although in the conference, we could see a lot of hardware vendor display their products with Ubuntu installed. However, how many of it will be brought into Taiwan market? In Taiwan, it is the case of fans installs Ubuntu by themselves, in market reality, almost no chance of seeing one with Ubuntu preinstalled.
Of course, the answer is not all that surprising. In their words, it isn't something they can control. It would require the three-way communication between them, the hardware vendor in the middle and the consumers. In particular, the consumers end. It's only when consumers started to push hardware vendor that we might see hardware vendor selling notebooks with Ubuntu preinstalled.
After the reply, the vendor was quick to add for fact they will be educating the market. Good, we hereby wish them luck, keep up the good work.

This one runs Android, however, it's only an initial porting.

Brazilian Portuguese...

Ubuntu.
NAOKI @ Jun 5th 2009 4:15AM

johnchao @ Jun 5th 2009 11:51AM
NAOKI @ Jun 5th 2009 7:18PM

Web ATM ..
