就在 52 年前的 Photokina，Leica 發表了傳奇的 Leica M3 rangefinder 系列膠卷相機。而這屆在科隆舉辦的 Photokina 則是 M 系列相機首度跨入數位時代的舞台。

M8 不僅擁有 rangefinder 系列經典的外型，它的 10.3mp CCD 感光器由 Kodak 生產，不僅支援到 ISO 2500，同時在感光器的邊緣還有特殊設計的微鏡片折射光線，減少漸暈（vignetting）的問題。M8 的最短快門可以到 1/8000 秒，使用閃光燈時也可以使用到 1/250 的快門，而為了延續 M 系列的傳統，M8 也可以使用從 1954 年至今幾乎所有生產過的鏡頭。

Leica 對上市和價格等資訊是守口如瓶，但外界的猜測是在 5000 美元左右的天價。但如果真的是能繼承 M 系列一向的優良血統的話，這個價格倒是花得一點也不冤。
